PHOTOS of Floating Installations for Oyster Cultivation
As recommended by manufacturer OysterGro, a field would contain 100 cages per acre. The CoGB maintain that these installations would pose a serious hazard to people and vessels if deployed within Gardiner's and Peconic Bays.
These images depict floating oyster and shellfish installations currently in operation in Gardiner's Bay and elsewhere. Not shown is additional the 10-acre buffer required by each lease area.
Clearly, boats would have huge swaths of navigable water removed, leading to greater crowding and danger in the remaining open water. Users of sailboats would be even more greatly impacted.
We recognize the greater convenience these floating systems may offer to the individual oyster grower, yet we object to the use of these systems, since their presence prevents others from using the water.
